Its newsletter time again – so much has happened in the bush this month, and besides the actual safaris, my thoughts have turned once again to all my friends and previous guests on safari. You’ve all made it such a pleasure to do what I do – thank you!

The famous Hyundai (the green bus) has made way for a brand spanking new Kia Pregio (white) and may she have as many wonderful, rewarding and exciting trips as the Hyundai, which has now moved on to live out her last few years as a courtesy vehicle for a hotel group.

Because we’ve had so many elephant encounters (up close and personal with the big guys) this past year, I thought it may be interesting for you to reflect on just what can happen on safari – and why its so important to be fully aware at all times that these animals are in their own environment and not to be taken for granted. Read more..

My last safari was a great pleasure, my guests were Gail and Garry from Australia – teachers, rugby enthusiasts (painful conversations around the fire) but more importantly – nature lovers who managed to get a first this year – a lion kill (buffalo) We watched for a record six hours as the news of the kill drew in the vultures, jackals and hyenas. 11 Lions in the pride! Our days and nights were spent under the resplendent southern sky – a first in seven months for Gail and Garry who had spent several months in the northern hemisphere before the safari. The southern cross, the milky way, which was once thought to be the entire universe, lay her luminous band of light across the sky – our galaxy from within – and so awe-inspiring we sat and watched as her light bounced up off the river and sparkled like fire-flies on the other side.

Talking about beautiful – Garry and Gail were also treated to one of the most fantastic sunsets I’ve ever seen in this country – Our first night was on the escarpment, and as we moved across the plateau – the sun bid us farewell in such glorious detail that Garry made me stop the vehicle several times, just to keep watching as her colours swelled and merged in a splash of golden orange with silver-pink tassels hanging across the western horizon.

It’s this that makes me want to go back as often as I do.

Click this link to check out my “Circle of Life” itinerary – I really would appreciate your comments and suggestions.

Guiding at a rhino midden can be very exciting – My article to the field guides association of South Africa will be published for all guides to see in their next newsletter. Those who have walked with me in the bush will understand.
Here’s a recipe link –Our next safari includes one or two vegetarian diets – so without further a do – here is a link one of the vegetarian meals we’ll be putting together later this month.
Next up are Michael and friends, and then Michele so until then, please write and let me know how you are all doing. Also, please do not hesitate to ask me questions or queries you may have regarding a trip to SA, ecology issues, or anything else - except rugby.

Kind regards
